5 Tips For Finding the Cheapest Online Airfare

These days most travelers purchase their airline tickets online.  But are all airfare sites created equal?  Here are five tips to have you find the cheapest online airfare.

1.  Know who the online airfare players are and don't be exclusively loyal to any one website.  Find out what each site specializes in and start your search with the one that meets your goal.  For example, Hotwire.com is great if you don't have any definite time to be at your destination; but simply won't work if you have to be in Atlanta for a meeting that starts at a specific time.  Here are some of the sites to visit:

Priceline.com
Travelocity.com
Hotwire.com
Expedia.com
2.  Comparison shop.  On any given day you may find airfare cheaper on one site in comparison to another.  You go back the next day and that pricing is reversed--it's cheaper on the other site.  Don't forget that sometimes the cheapest place to purchase online airfare is on the airline's website.  Southwest Airline for example will have its best prices and deals on its own website.

3.  Travel on Wednesday.  You should never plan to travel on weekends.  It usually turns out that the best day to travel and save money on airfare is on Wednesday.

4.  Plan ahead.  The earlier you can purchase your ticket, the better in most cases.

5.  If you have waited until the last minute to book your flight, have travel plans that are flexible.  Having flexibility gives you more options and helps you avoid purchasing tickets at any cost.
