10 Reasons Why People Travel

When people decide to leave the comforts of their home and venture to other locations there is usually a reason behind it. Whether the cause to travel was a last minute whimsy or had an actual purpose, it makes one think about all of the reasons why people travel. Reflect on the last time you left your location and ventured to another one. Did it have a purpose behind it? Let's look and see if your motive to travel matched any of the one's listed below. These are not listed in any particular order.

1. Romance- There are thousands of people who are involved in long distance relationships. At some point though, they need to see each other. For the sake of love, people will travel for hours to spend as much time as they can with the love of their life.

2. Relaxation- All work and no play is not a good thing. People need to get away from the stress of everyday life, and a nice sunny location with a beach might just be what the doctor ordered.

3. Family/ Friends -Many people have family/friends that are located in different parts of the world. They need to visit with them even if it's for a short period of time.

4. Religion- There are places in the world that hold religious importance for many people. Religious travel is often related to a purpose such as seeing where the last pope was buried, or traveling to the town where Jesus was born.

5. Death- A relative, friend or acquaintance has passed away and travel is required to attend the funeral which is located out of town.

6. Honeymoon- You're getting married and are going somewhere special to celebrate. This usually occurs right after the wedding, but there are many occasions where people celebrate a honeymoon years later.

7. Education-You're getting your education somewhere other than where you live or you are going away on an educational school trip.

8. Celebration- Wedding, Anniversary, Birthday, Birth- There's always something to celebrate and it doesn't always happen where you live.

9. Medical/Health- Sometimes the treatment you need isn't available in the city/town where you live. Often the best medical care is costly and requires travel to receive it.

10. Work- Job requirements might mean a fair bit of travel is involved. Even if the travel is within your own country it still has a purpose attached to it.

Overall, traveling can be a wonderful experience or it can be draining, expensive and just plain torture. Nonetheless if you need to go then embrace it for what it is, and try to make the best of it even if it wasn't planned.

What Does Travel Insurance Cover?

If you're about to head off traveling, whether it's a business trip, a beach bum holiday or a round-the-world no-holds-barred adventure, you need travel insurance. Anything can happen, and often does - looking at the annual statistics showing the thousands of travellers who get into sticky situations. It's important to know exactly what your travel insurance covers, so you know if you're getting the right cover for you.

What's Normally Included

The following areas are normally covered by travel insurance, but it's important to know to what extent. For example, if you buy certain budget options, you may well be covered for theft of property, but if your laptop is worth $2000, it's a bit pointless if your policy only covers you up to $500. You should also look at the 'excess' - this is the amount you need to pay yourself in the event of a claim, before any payments are made back to you.

o Overseas medical/hospital expenses: The amount you are covered for can differ wildly depending on which policy you opt for. If you have a pre-existing condition, the company should be aware of it, or your cover may be void.

o Overseas emergency medical assistance: As above, if travelling to countries with high healthcare costs, such as the USA, it's a good idea to have this one marked 'unlimited'.

o Luggage/Personal Effects: Consider the figure given for this - if you are travelling with particularly expensive equipment, it should be covered. This also covers travel documents.

o Accidental Death: Arguably benefiting your loved ones more than you, but worth considering.

o Permanent Disability: Most policies cover this.

o Delayed Luggage Allowance: If your clothes arrive a week after you, you might need some fresh ones.

o Personal Liability: If you cause an accident, you'll need to pay damages.

o Cash: Cover for money stolen from your person.

o Cancellation Fees and Lost Deposits: If for any (good) reason you are forced to cancel or delay your trip, such as illness or poor weather.

o Alternative Transport Expenses: such as in the event of flight cancellation

o Additional Expenses: a whole range of unforeseen circumstances can lead to you incurring extra costs.

o Hijacking: An unlikely one, but expensive policies often cover for this. If you're not worried, don't fork out for it.

o Loss of Injury: Again, some more expensive policies will cover you if you sustain an injury overseas and cannot work upon returning to Australia.

o Travel Services Provider Insolvency: In the unlikely event of your airline going bust before you have a chance to board, some policies will have you covered.

Top 5 things to look out for when choosing travel insurance

Many people find it a pain buying insurance, but make sure you don't get caught out!

1. Ensure that if you're likely to do a dangerous activity, such as paragliding or scuba diving, that you check if you're covered for it - many insurance companies hate such activities as they cost them too much money.

2. Make sure that you have enough cover. Medical costs can be huge in certain countries, while budget insurance deals can leave you paying for half of your stolen camera despite being covered. If you're carrying a lot of expensive gear, make sure you're covered for all of it. Also, check what the excess is. If you have to pay $100 and your MP3 player that accidentally went scuba diving with you was five years old already, think twice.

3. Do you have existing medical conditions? You might not be covered - so own up before to make sure.

4. Other general exclusions include acts of war, loss of property due to extreme carelessness, or self-inflicted injury.

5. And finally, make sure you are covered for the full duration of your trip - a common error is to get international dates mixed up - just because your Sydney-bound flight leaves L.A. on the 14th, doesn't mean it's still the 14th when you arrive! Last minute bungles do happen!

Best and Worst Times to Travel to Europe

When planning your European trip, check your arrival and departures dates and see if they take into account peak, off-peak and shoulder travel periods.

Peak periods are the times when majority of travelers fly in and out of countries and these periods usually coincide with school holidays, Christmas, Easter and New Year. The country you are flying into will also have peak periods unique to that country, so expect flights and accommodation to be heavily booked and tickets to be more expensive. This peak period generally covers late December to January (because of the Christmas season) and late June to the end of August (summer break). Travel during the Christmas holidays can be difficult as plane ticket prices soar and ski resorts start overcharging. Public transport is also reduced in most areas since only a few trains will leave on Christmas day. The "shoulder period" is in spring and autumn and the low or "off-peak" periods are usually in the remaining months and in the winter.

If you have only a limited time to see Europe, your best bet is to fly in and out during a shoulder period. Prices are almost at their lowest and travel conditions are great because you can avoid the crowds and the overpricing. If you have a lot of time to spare in Europe, try flying in the low season when fares are cheapest so you have more money to spread over your stay. It's always a good idea to start checking airfares 3-4 months before you leave. Airlines are starting to discount in order to reward early bookers and there's a lot time to wait if you think they're too high. The cheapest ticket prices might turn up on the net or at your ticket office at anytime. And while you're at it, make sure you've already reserved your accommodation 6 weeks to 2 months before you leave. It's a good idea to reserve a hotel for your arrival and departure days. The rest can be reserved afterwards. Also, remember to check for travel dangers and updates. Your government and insurance company might draw the line if you visit a certain territory they've warned you about. Be informed about the dangers and uprisings in the country you are visiting and do last-minute updates to check conditions right before you leave.

For most seasoned travelers, the best time to see Europe is from April to June and September to October when the weather is still warm, the holiday crowds have left and accommodation and transport are regularly priced.

In contrast, the single worst time to visit most parts of Europe (especially the western and southern countries) is the month of August. This is when many Europeans leave and take their holidays in nearby countries as well. The cities can be deserted and as a result, accommodation prices shoot up and finding a bed can be very difficult. Buses and trains will often be packed and it can be a struggle to get a seat while you cross countries. Even most tourist shops and sites can be closed because the proprietors have gone on holiday as well! There's little doubt that July and August are the busiest tourist months in Europe (mainly because of Americans on vacation) and it will require a lot of patience and money. Avoid these months as much as you can. If you really must travel in the high season, your best course of action is to stay away from the major cities and choose the off-track towns and villages and indulge in the local culture.

Top 10 Travel Tips To Help You Book A Dirt Cheap Flight

Smart travelers don't sit in a travel agents office to plan their vacations anymore, they go to travel websites to find discount airfare deals and book their own cheap flights. Airline carriers are at war and smart consumers who know the secrets to finding great online travel deals, can take advantage of this instability and save hundreds on their plane tickets.

Despite what you may have heard, tickets on flights are not sold at a fixed rate. Most airlines have a complex grading system in place for ticket prices. They have a set number of seats they must fill for a certain price and a second block of seats they will let go for a slightly cheaper ticket price and third set of seats for a another discounted ticket price. So, at any given time when you try to buy online airline tickets, you could come up with a number of different prices.

The secret to dirt cheap airfare, is knowing exactly when, where and how to buy the tickets. Timing is everything when it comes to finding cheap airfare. Should you buy your tickets one, two or six months before your desired departure date? Will you save more by purchasing round trip tickets or one way flights? Should you travel on or off season, and exactly when are the popular flight travel seasons? And finally, should you buy your plane tickets through a discount travel site, or through a popular travel search directory like Expedia or Travelocity?

Your first tip to find cheap airfare is to check out several travel directories that offer price results for all the major airlines so that you can compare ticket prices at a glance. My favorites are Expedia.com for their consistently low flight price quotes and easy two click price checks, Cheaptickets, com for their large inventory of cheap airfare selections and sidestep.com for their huge selection of customized flight results. As a traveler you need to log on to these websites and get a feel for how often the prices change and bookmark them for future use.

Airlines and travel websites offer bigger discounts and cheaper airfare prices to people who book online because it saves them the overhead costs of printing and handling a paper ticket. So be sure to use the e-ticket option when purchasing your plane tickets online. Don't wait till the last minute though, the best cheap airfare prices are found about 21 days before your departure date.

The highest plane ticket prices are found 14 days or less before departure, so don't wait till the last minute to buy your ticket if you're hoping to find discount airfare. But keep in mind that many airlines give away dirt cheap plane tickets about half an hour before liftoff.

Be sure to purchase round trip tickets rather than one way, the best cheap airfare deals are usually offered to round trip travelers.

Cheap flights during the holidays can be hard to find, the secret is to fly the day of the holiday not the day before or after when flights are jam packed.

You can save even more money on airfare if your plan your vacation during the off season. Travel professionals say that the best time to book a cheap flight online is mid-January to end February, April through May, and in the fall from mid-September to mid-December.

The time of day that you book online plane tickets is important too. If you checked plane ticket prices at 6 am and then again at 6 pm on the same travel website, you'd be shocked to find that you just lost 20 or 30 bucks by waiting too long or not long enough. Another variable that is imperative to finding dirt cheap flights is, the day of the week you make your online ticket purchase. Most traveler's purchase their tickets on a Saturday or Sunday, but is that the smartest day to get dirt cheap airfare?

How to Find Cheap Plane Tickets - 5 Tips For Cheap Travel

Anyone who is planning a vacation is usually going to be on the lookout for cheap plane tickets, unless you plan to drive of course. But in this day and time, most people fly to their vacation destinations, and low cost airfare is a high priority.

But how can you travel cheap and find these great deals? Doesn't it seem like everyone and their brother can find these excellent airfare bargains except you? I am always listening to my friends yammer on about what a super price they got on some airplane ticket or another.

Well here are 5 tips you can use to give you some help on how to find cheap plane tickets:

1. Start your search early. Don't wait till the last minute because most of the bargains will be gone by then. Try to look more than 2 weeks prior to your trip.

2. If you do happen to procrastinate and are into that 2-week period before your trip, wait till the final week or even the final few days and try and find a last-minute deal. The airlines really want to fill those seats so if it comes down to the final hours and they have a bunch open they may offer them at a lower fare.

3. Try the smaller carriers rather than the huge companies. It doesn't always work out that way, but normally they are cheaper.

4. Try calling the airline company instead of searching online. Sometimes you'll be able to get a great deal by talking to someone at the counter instead of just using the computer.

5. Visit a brick and mortar travel agency. This means you have to actually log off the computer and drive somewhere, but the people who work there are pros and they can very likely find a better deal for you than you yourself will be able to dig up. It's worth a try anyway!

Last Minute Airline Travel

Frequent travelers and businessmen are privileged, as they are offered heavy discounts while traveling. The companies that function globally, are also those many who have tie ups with airlines and avail of heavy discounts, which enables them to cut short on the expenses.

Most last minute airfare deals can be confirmed three to fourteen days before the flight. The reason that the airlines offer last minute deals is that, usually a couple of seats on most flights remain vacant and filing these empty seats is a great way to get them reserved immediately. Another reason why such offers are short lived is that once a person purchases the flight ticket at that rate, there are no more vacant seats.

These types of last minute airfare offers are found in abundance. The search for one that caters to specific requirements is difficult, as it depends on the destination and budget flexibility. However, if a person enjoys traveling alone or is fond of adventure, he can be bowled over by the down to earth rates.

Along with the hotel accommodations, a person can also make sure that the flight tickets have been reserved, as it is comparatively cheaper being clubbed together. Frequent travelers can also apply for memberships, which offer them the benefit of traveling at a discounted rate.

Enthusiastic travelers find it more convenient to go online and bid for tickets. It has to be kept in mind that the destination should match with convenience. This is however a gamble. If at the last minute, due to an emergency, the plan needs to be re-scheduled, the fee will have to be paid. There are other airlines that offer discounted rates for last minute reservations. They have to meet the expectations of customers and keep up their reputation in the competitive market.

Travel Bargains - How Do You Get The Fantastic Travel Bargains You Often Hear Other People Get?

Once you have decided where you wish to go, there are two main avenues open to you to make your booking:

The first and easiest is to make one booking to include your flight, hotel, car hire, etc. This method is generally preferable if you are short of time. Travel agents can often offer good value, which is obtained from individual firms due to bulk buying.

Another main avenue open to you is to book your travel components individually. There are many specialty online search engines that allow you to find the best values for your needs.

Nevertheless, there are some other possible steps that you can take in order to get a better discount:

1. Book early. Generally, the nearer to the date of travel, the more expensive are the seats on flights. The only exception being if you can travel at a moment's notice. In that case you can grab a last-minute package when someone cancels late.

Of course you'll have to register with some travel agencies in order to be notified of last minute cancellations. But if you can't travel at a moment's notice, then book early.

2. If you are buying more than one ticket, further discount is possible.

3. Be flexible. Sometimes weekend outward and inwards journeys can be cheaper (less business travelers). Similarly, some flights which leave later at night can be cheaper.

4. If your timetable allows, consider taking indirect an indirect flight. Indirect flights take longer, but can be cheaper than direct flights.

5. If possible, consider traveling other than peak periods. For example, flights during certain periods such as school holidays, Christmas, and Easter are more expensive than other times.

6. All airlines overbook in order to compensate for no shows. Sometimes everyone shows up, in which case there are more passengers than seats! If you are offered, consider taking a later flight because it means further savings in the form of vouchers.

7. Another option may be to travel as 'stand by'. But this method usually means little or no notice before travel. Furthermore, you may have a long wait ahead until an empty seat becomes available.

8. For some lucky independent travelers, it is possible to fly as a 'courier'. Some companies will pay for your flight in exchange for delivering important letter and packages. However, do bear in mind that due to specialty firms, 'courier' flights are very rare.

9. Buy a suitable travel insurance. In case of illness, accident, loss of property, etc, the insurance premium is money well spent to counter any eventualities.

The more time and effort you apply, the greater your savings are likely to be. In many instances, your savings can be substantial. So much so that you'll be able to add extra days to your holiday at no extra charge!

Last Minute Travel Insurance

Many travellers wait until the last minute before buying their travel insurance, because they know that if they purchase the insurance online, they can have a policy in their hands straight away. This is how most online insurance websites normally do business. However, buying their travel insurance very close to the date they are going to leave town on holiday or on a business trip runs a greater risk of them being uninsured in case they have to cancel their trip.

How can this be? What does waiting to purchase travel insurance have to do with cancelling your holiday or business trip? It all has to do with one of the benefits of travel insurance. Let's say you have plans to go on holiday. You have your plane tickets and have booked a hotel room at your destination. You've purchased new luggage and some new clothing and you just can't wait to go on holiday - its been so long since you were able to get away!

But... what if something happened to you before you went on holiday? You may become ill or injured, or possibly someone in your immediate family could pass away. Any of these reasons could cause you to cancel your long-planned holiday. Here's where travel insurance would come in very handy. Most travel insurance policies have a type of travel cancellation insurance that would take care of the expenses incurred as a result of having to cancel your holiday. Buying travel insurance before the last minute would avoid the risk of this happening and leaving you out of pocket.

Life is not a given. We never know what is going to happen to us or to members of our family from one day to the next. Anything could come up suddenly that could cause a holiday's unexpected, yet forced cancellation. By putting off buying your travel insurance until the last minute, you are making yourself vulnerable to losing not only your holiday but also the money you have already spent.

People are often busy before going on holiday and can panic when they realise how little time they have left to tie up loose ends before their trip. This can result in them rushing around and buying the first travel insurance policy that they come across. They may be happy that they have managed to grab a travel insurance policy at the last minute but what if something does go wrong and the insurance they have bought does not give them the cover that they were expecting?

Imagine a parent discovering that the policy they bought at the last minute and entrusted to take care of their family's needs while on holiday, ends up turning them down for medical coverage because their child's asthma was considered to be a pre-existing condition by their insurance company. Taking time to shop around and compare policies could have saved them a great deal of worry and money. Some companies provide a list of pre-existing medical conditions which clearly shows what they do cover and asthma is one of them!

It is surprising how many people buy an insurance policy that is not right for them or their situation. Research shows that around 63% of people who are planning a holiday do not bother to take out a travel insurance policy until the last minute. They are not then covered for any of the bad luck that could occur in the run up to their trip which could end up with them having to cancel. Leaving it until the last minute and buying insurance in a rush can often mean they don't allow themselves time to make sure they read the fine print and are therefore getting the right coverage! Many people who don't read the fine print before buying their policy can end up very sorry afterwards however, some sites have their Product Disclosure right on their website, so that anyone can examine it closely before deciding whether or not to buy the travel insurance policy.

Some people think it is perfectly fine to travel with no insurance at all and do not realise what a huge risk they are taking! If, for example, they were involved in a car accident, what would they do? Without travel insurance coverage, they could very well end up having to pay out an enormous sum of money for medical and other expenses.

If you want to make sure you are covered for your holiday before and during your trip, you should purchase your travel insurance as soon as you have put a deposit down on your flight or accommodation.

Cheap Air Travel Tips

The era of airline travel has allowed us to travel the world and connect in ways that have never existed before. We can visit family overseas and travel anywhere in the world within 24 hours.

With all this ability to travel, we are also faced with the expense of such travel. For the many who would like to find cheap air travel, here are some tips. The first thing you need to know is that you never need to pay 'list price'. Airlines have many tiers of pricing, and the same seat can sell for prices differing in the hundreds of dollars, depending on where, when and how it is purchased.

Ask the Professionals:

Your first step would be to ask your travel agent for advice on when to purchase airline tickets. He or she will be able to give you some guidance as to which airlines offer discounts and when. For example, some airlines offer 'earlybird' pricing, and some also drop their prices as the trip date gets closer if no one has purchased the seat.

Get a Promotion:

If a scheduled flight is not full to capacity, whether due to cancellations or lack of bookings, some airlines will offer complimentary upgrades in seat class to selected passengers. Although this is less common than it used to be, it still happens occasionally. Your best shot at being selected for such an upgrade is to arrive for your flight dressed in a clean-cut, professional manner, and to be polite. You can even try asking at the check-in counter if there is any chance you can get an upgrade - they may offer it to you if such a perk is available, or may offer it at a lesser price than you would have paid when booking. Success will depend on many factors, such as the mood and authority level of the ticket attendant and the way you ask for it. They may also need to move passengers around for weight-and-balance purposes and can offer a better seat to assist in this process - you never get anything if you don't at least ask! Also, you can sometimes get a free or discounted flight by being on an 'overbooked' flight and being willing to wait until the next one can be arranged for you, but this is not something you have any control over.

Flexibility:

Are you flexible in your travel times or dates? By going 'standby' on an airline, you can hang out and wait until a seat becomes free or someone cancels, and can often get cheaper last-minute tickets.

'Pre-owned' Tickets:

For an array of reasons, people buy tickets and their plans change. When those tickets are non-refundable, they may try and sell them to receive at least some of their money back. This is good news for you, as you can take advantage of some discounted prices (remember, if they don't sell their tickets they get nothing, so anything they can recover is of help to them). On-sale tickets can be found many places, such as your local classifieds, craigslist online and auctions such as ebay; try google as well to search.

People are overburdened with work these days and have little or no time to take a break and relax. Sometimes, an effort is made to re-schedule and plan a vacation. The Top Five Ways to Get a Great Deal on Last Minute Travel

If you have some unexpected free time coming up and you'd like to get away for a few days, you're in luck. There are some great deals to be found for last minute travel. From reduced fares to great hotel rates, you'll be surprised at how much you can save on a spontaneous trip! Here are the top five ways to get a great deal on last minute travel.

#5-Check with the Airlines Directly

Very often, airlines may have great rates available for flights that aren't quite full. They would rather have someone pay a lower fare than have no one in the seat at all. You would need to contact the airline directly to avail yourself of last minute travel deals; most airlines will not authorize their ticketing agents to give lower rates for a half-full flight. When you call the airline, don't be afraid to ask for a lower fare.

#4-Look for Websites that Specialize in Last Minute Travel

There are a number of websites that only deal with those leaving in a week's time or less. They have worked out specific deals with airlines, rental companies and hotels to provide travelers with the best rate possible. You may have lesser flexibility with your departure times, itineraries or the choice of room but the reduced rates could more than make up for the little adjustments you will have to make.

#3-Check with the Major Ticket Brokers

There are a number of major ticket brokers that offer significant savings for people who need a flight without any advance notice. In most cases, you will save about 30 percent off the regular fare. You will find a special section on their websites specifically for these types of reservations. These tickets usually sell very quickly, so if you see a fare that's within your budget, grab it up. Otherwise, you may end up paying full price in the end.

#2-Check with Your Credit Card Company

Many of the major credit card companies offer free services for planning a vacation. You may find a great deal here, especially on airfare and hotels. If you belong to a travel assistance club, you may also find some savings there as well.

#1-Check with Your Travel Agency

Many times, a frazzled travel agent is trying to fill slots for flights, tours and cruises when people cancel with very little notice. You may find deeply discounted fares and prices, with extras thrown in just to make the deal even sweeter. Don't overlook this incredible avenue for finding affordable last minute travel deals.

A Final Thought

If you cannot find an airfare that's in your price range, consider renting a car or taking the train. Many times, this can save you hundreds of dollars over the cost of an airline ticket. Moreover, most alternative forms of transportation don't require an advance purchase to get the best rate.
